“It’s the most important meal of the day!”
I know you’ve heard it a million times ….that’s because it’s true! Eating a healthy breakfast every day is one of the best things you can do for your body.
When I was in a college physiology class many years ago, I learned that when you skip a meal your body panics and begins to store fats. It also slows down your metabolism to reserve energy.
That’s the opposite of what we want for our health. We want to keep our metabolism raised so we can effectively burn calories throughout the day. That is why we exercise as well, to keep our “motor” revved up, giving us energy and, at the same time, not letting extra calories get stored as fat.
I also learned that if you eat smaller quantities more often your body will stay in a healthy range of a raised metabolism versus the “starvation” mode where it begins to store fat. (Anytime you go 5 hours or more without eating, even though you are not actually “starving,” your body starts to conserve.)
People often ask how I can stay in good shape while I eat so much. I believe it is because I eat a healthy breakfast, usually including eggs. Every couple hours I eat healthy snacks, a light lunch and dinner. The ingredients I eat are real, unprocessed, quality calories. And, I exercise 5 times a week. I never let my body go into starvation mode, I avoid chemicals and processed foods in my body. When I eat ice cream, I eat Breyers Natural Vanilla, which has a very short ingredient list of milk, cream, eggs, sugar. Just the good stuff! If I put it in my body, I want it to be quality. And then it’s easier to burn it off when I exercise.
I know life is busy, but try these healthy, quick breakfast ideas and take care of your body.
Research has shown that people who eat breakfast lose more weight. They add to their daily nutrients and vitamins, have better concentration, more strength in physical activities and lower cholesterol levels. (Source: Webmd.com)
Even if you just have a bowl of cereal, you’re doing your body a favor, but make it a healthy choice, not a sugary cereal. Try Mom’s Best or Simple Truth Organic brands. Most important, look at the label and make sure the sugar per serving is about 7g or less. We like Toasted Oats at 1g per serving.
Other fast ideas for breakfast and frequenters at our house include poached eggs on whole grain toast, french toast and breakfast burritos (great to make ahead and have ready for your busy morning!)
I hope this gave you some extra motivation to eat breakfast every day. In just 15 min. or less you can be a healthier you. Skip the fast-food breakfast and eat a healthy meal at home. Have a great day!
Happy Cooking! ~ Gena
